In class last night we discussed whether bigger is better?

When talking about all things BIG, the city of Dubai is a good place to start. They have the world's biggest mall, the tallest building, the tallest apartment building, the most luxurious underwater hotel, the biggest lookout, and now, the world's highest restaurant. If that restaurant was in Guangzhou, given the air pollution here, would we be able to see anything?

Most of us felt that Guangzhou didn't need any of these buildings, although the ladies would be happy with the world's biggest mall. Surprise, surprise.

Finally, we discussed if a city can have personality. Antonia gave a great answer, saying, yes, cities definitely can. What type of personality? Well, that's your opinion. Connery felt that politicians always suck the personality out of a city. Perhaps it just means a city has a boring personality.

SO, what type of personality does Guangzhou have?

What type of personality does Guangzhou have?

Subject: City Personality

Ha Ha I like your thinking!
What is your hometown's personality?

I'm from Wellington New Zealand. It is called the "Windy City" because it has a big problem with too much cold wind from the Antarctic.
I think my home town is a little 'quirky'(strange), with very narrow streets that climb up steep hills but also wide motorways that bring people into the middle of it and then dump them in a busy city. There are lots of cafe's and theatres, but it is the capital city with many offices and governmental departments.
Most people think Wellington's personality is 'Cultured' because there is a big 'art scene' there.

It isn't the 'biggest city' in New Zealand but it is the 'windiest'!

Subject: Guangzhou

There are much more folklore activities in Guangzhou than in other cities in China, espacially during traditional festival days. Rowing Dragon Boat is a very typical one. But nowdays such interesting folklore activities are withering away under construction of modern cosmopolis...

Subject: Guangzhou's personality

I think Guangzhou is a traditional and fashionable city! Being traditional, Guangzhou has more than two-thousand-year's history and culture, Dragon Boat Festival is an example. Being fashionable, Guangzhou has many up to date electronic products, fashionable dress, appliances, etc. Guangzhou Tower has the most fashionable design, I think!

Lam... I get the feeling you're from Guangzhou? haha

I agree with you very strongly though. As Guangzhou advances so rapidly, I wonder if it will be able to maintain the balance, or whether the fashionable part will slowly make people forget traditions, as Connery points out.

I think Guangzhou's personality is similar to a teenager's. It's getting bigger and bigger everyday, it can be very loud, and sometimes a little bit odd.
