Hello students, we had our first Literature Club this week. Bella, Angel, Vergil, Victor and Alice, thank you very much for your participation. For students who don’t know much about this Life Club, I would like to do a brief introduction here first. Also, I put up an announcement for Literature Club at the front desk and the help desk. If you are interested in coming, you can go to Oboe and click on Litrtr L.

First, to answer your question—‘What is literature?’ The simplest answer would be ‘Books, magazines, articles, plays, short stories, poems-anything that uses the written word.’ So, if you wish to improve your reading, speaking and critical thinking abilities through English stories, this is the class you should go to.

Now, you probably want to find out how this class is going to be carried out. Generally, I will give you a piece of literature (mostly short and easy-to-read stories, in English, of course) one week before the class. This will give you enough time to finish the reading by yourself. When you come to class, different forms of activities will be implemented to help you further understand and analyze the literature from different aspects—vocabulary, plot, setting, characters, themes, etc. After class, you are always welcome to visit this blog to join our further discussions.

The Missing Piece

This is the story we talked about in class today. The reason I love this story is there are so many ways of interpreting this story. Everybody can see the missing piece from their own aspects.

For example, Angel thought this story was like a life journey—it is about searching for happiness. First, the missing piece was looking for the happiness from everywhere around him. In the end, he finds the happiness in himself. Victor had three explanations for the story. First, he suggested it’s about looking for jobs. The missing piece was looking for a job that suits him, and even tried very hard to change itself to suit the jobs. The second idea was about socializing—how people get along with each other. The last one was about a boy grows up to be a man.

These are all very good ideas and honestly, I was very impressed by the ways how you think. I think this is the reason I will enjoy the Litr Club. I hope it will work out in the same way for you too.
